I’ve been using an iphone for a few months now and I like it. It’s sleek, stylish, and pretty to look at. I especially like the “shaking” icons that occurs when you go to delete one of them from your home screen – it’s like they’re all frightened that they will be the one given the axe.
I like the App Store’s selection and convenience and centralized payment method. I’d be far less likely to try apps if I had to give my CC info to some random developer directly.
I like the apps which are usually as easy on the eyes as just about everything else on the iphone OS. Tweetdeck, Zendesk, Facebook are the 3 I use most.
I like the games. Playfirst’s DASH series, Bejeweled Blitz with FB integration, Angry Birds (thanks to the Diggnation guys for introducing me to this latest addiction), Words with Friends, etc, etc, etc.
But at the end of the day, when I actually have to get real solid work done on the road, the “cool” looks and slick interface does nothing for me. Case in point, when IMing with a colleague on my day off, I had to open up a ticket in my zendesk app and send a customer an update. While typing my response in the ticket, I had to look something up in email and ask them a follow up question via chat. Well you iphone users know where I’m going with this -- when I looked up the ticket, I lost my chat, when I looked up the email, I lost my ticket and the response I’d been painstakingly tapping out on the keyboard that is way too small for my thumbs and even less accurate. And, here’s the kicker, for a SMART phone that starts at $200 and requires a $40 monthly data plan, I feel it SHOULD do it all. Out of the box. It’s getting tiring to have every google search I do re: how to do something on the iphone be “jailbreak it.”
The next thing I found perplexing and frustrating, is that I can’t just save an attachment down from email on my iphone. I use iSilo for several documents, which are often emailed to me and I can’t save them down because 1) there isn’t dedicated storage places for this and 2) Mail doesn’t recognize the file type and won’t let me save or open it. So I went from being able to email myself an isilo document and saving it down to this.
Oh and the spinning wheel that everyone complains about on WinMo? I get one just as often on my iphone except it’s white. And I’ve had to reset my iphone several times too after it just freezes on the apple icon or crashes – only it’s much harder to do without the option of just popping the battery out.
Now, that being said, I have issues with my Omnia 2 as well (a post for another day). Also, I know the iphone 4 is just about released that should allow some multitasking-like activity and that there are rumors that Windows 7 phones will NOT allow multitasking so I may just be singing a different tune in the future. Perhaps it’ll be time to check out Android soon … but for now, I’ll stick with the functionality of WinMo over the form of the iphone all day, any day.
