Windows Live Writer is a desktop application that is supposed to let you update your blogs from a Word like editor.
I’d heard about it but since I’ve been working primarily in OSX lately, I didn’t bother checking it out until it was featured in this month’s issue of PC World. When I read that it works with popular blogging sites like Blogger (not just Live Journal) I decided to check it out and so far I’m impressed.
One of the biggest issues I have with blogger is when I add pictures or screen shots to the post. The pictures are always inserted at the top of the post and it’s often a pain to drag it into position in the little window of the Blogger editor. With Windows Live Writer, the picture is inserted where the cursor is positioned and moving it around is very easy.
Another advantage to using this desktop application for blogging is that you can blog offline, or on the road, from the same interface you use to publish. This comes in handy for me when I travel and am often blogging offline until I can get to the next Internet cafe. What I’ve done in the past is keep a “travel journal” in Word, OneNote, or Evernote and then copy/paste it into blogger when I had internet access. That should all go away with Windows Live Writer but we’ll have to wait & test it out on my next trip.
Windows Live Writer works with most of the popular blogging sites like Wordpress, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, etc. Just a word of advice before you download, make sure you pay attention to the check boxes in the installer and UNCHECK all of the unwanted software (toolbar, mail, etc).
I’d love to hear from other bloggers. Do you use Windows Live Writer or any desktop application? Why or why not? If you do, which app do you prefer?
