An absolutely delightful, true, and entertaining novel about Thatcher-era Britain. The characters are keenly observed and skillfully drawn, and the author makes us care about them. I'm especially impressed with how Robinson writes his female characters; his portraits are believable, and full of amusement and real appreciation that comes across in numerous details. In addition to his excellent descriptive writing, the dialogue is smart, witty, sharp, entertaining, and always rings true: it's a trap for most writers but Robinson handles it far better than many well-known authors. The best of books are initially more difficult to absorb and become part of, yet leave you, at the end, wishing for more. Gorgon Times is one of these. It presents the characters of unusual hero and heroine Hatch and Clare in a slow and absorbing way which leaves you feeling like you know them better than other, more quickly presented protagonists but still not quite as well as you would like to.
For the reader who knows little about science, manufacture or the era in which the novel was written, the descriptions and explanations are informative and well distributed through the actions and thoughts of the characters. The book is cleverly written and has a pleasant timbre to it. For those of you in search of "something a bit different", I would recommend this as an option.
There are two main characters who inhabit the pages of Gorgon Times, a novel set in the `90s, when Thatcher was writ large. One is an engineer; the other comes from a scientific background. Hatch is a compelling character from the start, and at first I found myself resenting having to say "au revoir" to him, as another narrative took over. That said, Clare is interesting in a different way, and the interview chapter wholly vortexed me in to her experiences. It is fascinating to see how she grapples with her role not only as a feminist yet also inwardly in a deeply personal way. The spouses of course play a vital part in balancing the emotional landscape, which is pretty rugged at times. When Hatch moves into television, his landscape changes and so does he, and so do his relationships, superficially and also deep down.
I very much enjoyed the way Gorgon Times makes use of episodic techniques and non-linearity of narrative to create a composite picture of how the world of work bugs, moulds, demeans, challenges, dictates to, adrenalises and finally defines us as human beings. How work manages to do all of these, and simultaneously to reach into the darker places of our personal lives and loves, is absorbingly and humorously recounted in Gorgon Times. I found the narrative style pleasingly compassionate rather than judgemental - yet there is also a sense that the dire failings as well as the adaptive strengths of the working commercial world are seen clearly in a discerning mirror.
Roderick Robinson writes with great insight and understanding. I can wholly recommend this book.

If you've wondered at his blog posts on TONE DEAF, wondered how they might work sewn seamlessly into a novel, here's your ticket. Brilliant, moving, and very very funny. If you are mechanically inclined, and smart, you'll love it. If you are interested in the complexity of perceptions within relationships (you're smart), you'll love it. If you're smart, you'll love it, and you'll learn a lot.
